This trip, entirely within the Navaho Nation, began at the end of a long drive on an impossibly rough road. After a warm day, hiking along a muddy stream deep inside Navaho Canyon, we pitched camp. The following morning we climbed up the steep wall, several hundred feet, to see just where we would be going in the week to come. Only one of us knew how we were going to cross that convoluted landscape; and he wasn't talking!
