Once up on the Rainbow Plateau, water became scarce. The success of our trip depended on finding it. Here we settled into a narrow canyon with a huge water filled “tank,“ or pothole at its head. Hundreds of gallons of runoff kept it filled, more than enough for us (and a frog or two). At dawn, I climbed up to this vantage point to take some photos and to greet the day with some music on my recorder. Unbeknownst to me, rainy weather lay ahead.
