As we picked our way over the slickrock it wasn't hard to imagine Navaho shepherds of an earlier era leading their herds of sheep across these sparsely vegetated domes. This was steep terrain. Perhaps some of those bleached bones we encountered were those of the less sure-footed livestock. Here we climb a gully, assisted by the remains of logs which had been wedged, step-like, into drilled holes in the rock.
